Construction of the Freestall Barn-2002 The Red Barn in the farm's early years

In 1974, the first year that Fred began renting a farm just north of Barron, he married Kathy Erickson. Fred, as a teenager, worked for Lyman Erickson (not related to Kathy) on Lyman's farm. From 1972-1974, Fred studied at WITC, where he earned a Dairy Management certificate. Kathy had grown up on a farm behind where Baribeau's Implement is now, just outside of Rice Lake. She had previously earned an associate degree in accounting, attending UW-Barron County. Prior to 1977, the two of them rented a farm of 120 acres near Barron. Fred milked around 40 cows and Kathy was employed at Barron County Public Health doing bookkeeping. In 1977, they purchased the current location at 1747 19th Avenue. At the time, the farm consisted of 150-acres. Over the next quarter of a century, they milked around five dozen head of cattle. In that time, they also had three children: Julie, Mike, and Sarah. Julie and Joe (Moenck) lived near Rochester, Minnesota, until 2021, when they moved to the Birchwood area and purchased a house on the lake. Sarah and Chuck (Fastner) live in Milwaukee's suburb of Pewaukee. They have one son, Mason, born in 2020. Fred and Kathy's only son, Mike, was the middle child. He married Cindy (Uher) in 2002. Mike has spent his whole life helping on the farm and working to make improvements to the systems employed. They have two sons; Daniel, the oldest, a member of the Rice Lake FFA and 2023 Wisconsin FFA State Convention Creed Speaking LDE Champion, and Garrett, the youngest, who is also active in the community. Both boys frequently help on the farm with animals, machinery, and any other necessary jobs.
